My Story

May 4th, 2018 was the day I fell in love with engineering. It was my 16th birthday, and I was celebrating with complete strangers halfway around the world in Hebei, China. I was on a mission trip working in a remote village with limited access to food, water and electricity and I went in expecting to see a depressing, poverty-stricken place. I thought I would be in and out without any notice, but that was the exact opposite of what happened.

After we completed our infrastructure project, the locals could not stop smiling, laughing, and giving hugs. They hosted a street party, where my team competed in a dance off against the kids in the village. Why were these people so happy? How could a simple project make everyone smile? It was then I realized the true impact of engineering; these people were overjoyed because we helped solve their problem. While we could not speak the same language and did not have much in common, I understood that my work made a difference in their lives. I found out that engineering could help people in need - I was hooked.

Check out a few pictures of my trip below:

My Work

Whenever I join a team, my immediate goal is to be a high impact player. I achieve this by combining my technical and creative thinking skills to spark innovation. One of my favourite ways to get a project going is through rapid prototyping - I always test the most difficult parts of the problem first to see if the solution is worth pursing.

An small example of rapid prototyping was the creation of this website's logo. I started with the initials of my name and continued to tweak and tinker until I got something I liked. Whether it is making a 3D printed exoskeleton or a docking system for a sea drone, this methodology helps me fail quickly and not waste time on inefficient ideas.
