Except for a 1 year exchange in Brisbane, Australia, I’ve lived my whole life in Whitby, Ontario. For the past two summers, I decided to intern for my local municipality so I could give back to my community and improve the quality of our infrastructure. In this role, I led teams of 12-20 workers to complete large projects that improved safety and accessibility within Whitby. On this page I’ll talk about the leadership skills I used to bring my teams together and inspire change and innovation in my neighborhood.
Active Transportation - Garden St. MUP
In one of my first projects as an intern, I took it upon myself to manage a $550000 budget installing cyclist friendly paths in North Whitby. Our goal was to create a wide route that could extend from Lake Ontario until Taunton Rd.
During this project, I needed to be very organized and up to date with the tasks being completed as I was responsible for payments and residential interests. I constantly checked in with the labourers and ensured they understood the plan, which improved communication and success probability. When issues arose, I worked quickly to solve them and direct the appropriate resources to the correct course of action. It was creative thinking and problem-solving skills that allowed me t0 be successful at this position. Overall, my project reduced traffic congestion by 25% and I was responsible for resolving $34000 in residential claims as well. The most rewarding part was talking to cyclists, runners, and pedestrians that used the path and appreciated my hard work over the summer.

2022 Miscellaneous Sidewalk Contract (ongoing)
One of the largest contracts during the year is replacing and repairing (Re & Re) walkways in Whitby that have been damaged or need to be upgraded. The priority for this is accessibility and safety. I always begin by thinking how can I accommodate those that have disabilities to make their lives easier while they are moving around and staying active.
I’ve attached a few pictures where I’m working with the team and communicating design objectives. |
